Keynote: “Building Successful Businesses” – PIERS LINNEY

Our keynote speaker at the Conference will be renowned entrepreneur, investor, adviser and BBC Dragon Piers Linney. Piers grew up in a former mill town in Lancashire surrounded by the remnants of the industrial revolution, fascinated by stories of the great entrepreneurs of the age. He started his first business at the age of 13 by cutting out the local newsagent and going to direct to the wholesaler.

Piers first came into the public eye in 2011 when he appeared on the Channel 4 series The Secret Millionaire, where he went undercover in a Young Offenders’ Prison, and then joined Dragons’ Den for two seasons, from 2013 to 2015. He has used his profile, experience and knowledge to champion entrepreneurs and SMEs and is a passionate believer in the importance of SMEs to the success of the UK economy.

Piers says “I enjoy sharing my experience, insights, practical business advice and knowledge about entrepreneurship, business, #startups, #scaleups, innovation and the financing market for growth businesses. I will share inspiring and practical realities as well as insights into the future of business and the workplace.”

SAPCA Annual Dinner Hosted by – MARK CLEMMIT

This year’s Annual Dinner, and the presentation of the SAPCA Awards, will be hosted by BBC sports presenter Mark Clemmit.

Mark (also known to many as Clem), is one of English football’s most familiar voices and faces, renowned for his relaxed “access all areas” style as the features reporter on BBC One’s Football Focus. He is also part of the studio presentation team on Final Score and a reporter for Match of the Day Live. Mark is one of the longest established voices on BBC Radio 5 Live and has hosted the station’s flagship 5 Live Sport programme and their coverage of The Great North Run. Mark is known as a specialist in life below the Premier League, often championing the role of the underdog.

He describes his broadcasting career as a happy accident. While running his own fashion business, a chance comment on the way home from a football match led to his idea for a radio fanzine programme, dedicated to his local team – Middlesbrough. Producing and recording a pilot, Red Balls On Fire was initially given a five-week run on BBC Local Radio. Within nine months and on a budget of just £50 per week, it was nominated for a prestigious Sony Radio Award, repeating the feat a year later.

The SAPCA Annual Dinner is always a highly enjoyable occasion for our members and guests, and will provide an evening of excellent food, wine, entertainment and company, as well as celebrating the achievements of member companies through the SAPCA Awards. Black Tie dress code.

Take a Tour of St George’s Park with SCOTT BROOKS

For those attending next month’s SAPCA Conference, there’s a very special opportunity to take a guided tour of the facilities at St George’s Park, in the company of Head Groundsman Scott Brooks. On the Tuesday afternoon, 12 March, (the day before the main Conference), delegates are invited to join Scott for a walk around the facilities at the National Football Centre, home to England’s 28 national teams. The tour will start at 3.30 pm and last for up to two hours, including a Q&A session, when members will be able to quiz Scott about any aspects of the maintenance and use of the Centre.

While there is no charge for the tour, places will be limited, and should be reserved when registering as a delegate for the Conference. Following the tour, there will be an informal networking dinner in the evening, from 7.00 pm. Hotel accommodation at SGP can be booked through SAPCA at the same time.

Scott will also feature within the Conference programme the next day, outlining the benefits of modern technology and innovation to the role of the groundsman, in the care of both natural and synthetic surfaces.

The options and costs of attendance are as follows. The Full Conference Delegate package for the Wednesday includes all Conference sessions and refreshments, the Annual Dinner and overnight B&B accommodation at the Hilton at St George’s Park. (All prices shown are ex-VAT.)

  • Annual Dinner (Wed): £100
  • Annual Dinner plus Wednesday B&B accommodation: £200
  • Tuesday evening networking dinner: £30
  • Tuesday B&B accommodation: £105

There is a limited number of places available on the tour of SGP on the Tuesday afternoon. There is no charge – simply select the option for each delegate on the Booking Form.

Bookings should be made online by Friday 1 March. You can simply type in your responses and click “Submit”. Alternatively, you can print the form and fax it to SAPCA on 024 7641 4773 or email it to Confirmation of your booking will be emailed to you with an invoice, which should be paid by Friday 8 March.
