Blakedown Sport and Play Ltd have been employed to construct a new full-size hockey pitch, a half size training pitch, cricket wickets, a block of external hard courts and internal hard courts at Bradford Grammar School (BGS).

BGS is an outstanding UK independent grammar school, which believes in providing every opportunity for its Junior and Senior pupils.

The school, which counts the Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee among its alumni, has also brought in several new sports names as part of the redevelopment. The new sporting staff has a wealth of experience, from ex-professionals and internationals to national league and age group international athletes who have represented Team GB.

The FIH approved hockey pitch and training area was installed using the Astro Turf XLR78 Sand-dressed system; constructed onto a tarmac engineered base and a 15mm insitu pad. The ECB approved cricket wickets were built using the latest dynamic base system by Club Turf Cricket Limited and the external tennis and netball courts were constructed using 6mm sports mix macadam. The internal courts will be acrylic coated to meet the current slip resistance criteria. The site has been floodlit using state of the art LED technology.

Simon Hinchliffe, Headmaster at BGS, said: “This is an exciting time in the history of our school. Sport is central to the offering at the school and our new redevelopment will provide the perfect environment for our enhanced sports curriculum which caters for all our young people.

“We’ve been successful in recruiting a number of staff to our enlarged sports department with specialist expertise in their fields to help deliver the school’s sporting vision.”

Oliver Rogers, Director of Sport at BGS, said: “We’re keen to nurture the interests and abilities of every child who takes part in sport at school as well as those who are keen to excel and pursue careers in it. Our new sports team will support the vision we have and, as is the tradition in independent schools, a wide cross section of academic staff will continue to contribute to BGS sport.”
