Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre at Parc Eirias is recognised as a national centre of sporting excellence; managed by Conwy County Borough Council.
Recent redevelopments will benefit the wider community contributing to social, economic and environmental well-being whilst further enhancing the facilities with a vision by the council to attract more professional and national sporting teams to the venue.
The new 3G artificial turf rugby pitch built by McArdle Sport Tec complies with Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Quality and World Rugby Reg 22 standards with the purpose of relieving pressure from the existing main stadium pitch, so that this facility can be reserved for showcase football and rugby fixtures.
Centrally located to the leisure centre, the 3G rugby pitch was built on a previous disc golf area over undulating ground. Throughout planning and design stage, environmental impact was of great importance, numerous bat boxes were installed, and twenty-four trees were planted to offset the removal of existing trees during construction phase.
Minister for culture, tourism and sport, Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, officially opened the new artificial rugby pitch alongside members of the Conwy County Borough Council.
Lord Elis-Thomas said, “The pitch is a very welcome addition to the wealth of top class indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities in North Wales and will no doubt contribute to the growth of sport in the region. Good quality, modern facilities play a huge part in encouraging more people to get active and it’s an honour to be here at beautiful Eirias.”
