David Morley Architects beats 16 other finalists to win SAPCA Award.
The London based company was handed the 2018 SAPCA Award for its work on University of Warwick Sports Hub.
The University has a vision to be the most active campus in the UK. The Sport and Wellness Facilities need to meet this aspiration, and the Sports Hub will provide opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities with links to other facilities via a network of paths, cycle ways, and activity areas.
The building will provide:
- Main sports hall sized to 16 badminton court layout
- Flexible 12 lane 25m pool space
- Climbing wall and bouldering facility
- Fitness suite
- Strength and conditioning suite
- Combat hall
- Squash courts
- Flexible studio spaces
The vision is to create a building where activity can be seen to encourage participation and has good views to the surrounding landscape. The building has developed to be expressed in three clear parts to manage the large volume spaces, such as the sports hall and swimming hall, to control the scale and mass with an entrance pavilion; these are linked together with an atrium that allows views to all the main activity areas.
The intention is to help the University to build upon and further enhance its national and international reputation by delivering an ‘inspirational offer’ of high quality facilities and programmes. This will drive participation in sport and activity while also promoting health and wellness among students and staff.
One of the proposed development’s key legacies will be to provide individuals with an opportunity to establish positive patterns of behaviour which remain with them beyond their graduation from the University of Warwick.
The SAPCA Awards are designed to promote the best examples of outstanding quality as each year members are invited to submit entries to celebrate their successes; this could be anything that deserves recognition, whether a new product or service, a technical innovation, a completed project, a research project, or an export success.
