Former Manchester United football player, Michael Carrick, visited his youth club ground to see the progress with the new 3G Smith pitch.

A young Michael Carrick played at Wallsend Boys Club before pursuing his dream to become a professional footballer, playing for West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Swindon Town, Birmingham City and England.

Well known for producing professional players, Wallsend Boys Club have trained more than 65 professionals at the start of their careers. Peter Beardsley, Fraser Forster, Shaun Lowther, Alan Shearer, Alan Thompson and Billy Wright, to name just a few.

Smith Construction were awarded the contract to design and build the new 3G Football Turf Pitch with preferred Football Turf producers Limonta via the Football Foundation Framework. Founded in 2000, the Football Foundation is the largest sports charity in the UK funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government, via Sport England.

The new artificial pitch has been surfaced with Limonta Sport Duo Shape P+, designed to replicate the performance characteristics of natural grass. It has a specialist shaped yarn providing strength and resilience. Pathways have been created around the pitch and a macadam spectator area constructed.

The new 3G pitch will provide Wallsend Boys Club with more playing hours and further opportunities to create more professional footballers.
