Royal Kent Primary School has been a key part of the community of Oxshott, Surrey for nearly two hundred years. Catering for children from Reception to Year 6, the school promotes a diverse curriculum of PE and extra-curricular sporting activities, including swimming, football, netball and many more.

Like many schools, on-site space for Royal Kent is not unlimited – and in this situation a MUGA is often the most effective and budget friendly solution to provide maximum sporting opportunities for every child. For this project, the contractor, ETC Sports Surfaces, selected a Matchplay 2 needlepunch sand filled surface – ideal for its free draining properties, safe, slip-free surface, hard wearing design and minimal maintenance demands.

The new MUGA was finished with double wire panelled fencing for safety and security, plus hoops and rebounds to allow children to enjoy basketball and netball amongst other sports and games. The main works were delivered over the summer holidays – a clever strategic decision for any school to minimise disruption to the busy school day.

Katie Hancock, Head Teacher of the school, said: “Our playground project was aimed at tackling a variety of issues and ETC Sports Surfaces were able to support us through all stages of thinking about and designing this. We wanted to improve the playground surface and the drainage underneath as well as installing a new MUGA, and we required planning permission to do this. The works took place over the summer holidays and the children were thrilled to come back in September to their new-look playground! We would recommend working with ETC Sports Surfaces to any school and we are very pleased that we chose to work with them.”

A group of Games Captains in Year 6 commented: “We love our new Sports Arena! All pupils, from Reception to Year 6 can use the features and we all appreciate that it is much softer when you fall over! As well as using it for different sports, we can also use it for all sorts of different activities at break times. We would give our Sports Arena 10/10 and would recommend that any school thinking about it should go for it!”
