The 2018 SAPCA Awards attracted a record number of entries, with a total of 17 contenders named as finalists for the prestigious honour. From those, a panel of judges chose David Morley Architects as the overall winner of the prize for the company’s work on the Sports Hub at University of Warwick.
Among the finalists was sports turf specialist FieldTurf – the synthetic turf division of Tarkett Sports – which was recognised for its new infill solution which promises an “eco-friendly performance without compromise”.
“At FieldTurf, innovation is in our DNA,” says Paul Fraser, Regional Business Director for Tarkett Sports. “Our mission is to deliver sustainable surfaces that make a difference for athletes and communities, but also for the environment.”
That was the motivation for FieldTurf’s new ProMax HydroFlex infill solution. The goal was to transform old artificial pitches into raw materials to create a new high-performance infill.
Engineered in Tarkett Sports’ in-house factory in Germany, FieldTurf ProMax HydroFlex is made of 70 per cent of the same virgin polymers as its existing, high quality turf fibers – combined with up to 30 per cent of PE from recycled turf fibres from end-of-life pitches.
The result is a new eco-friendly infill capable of delivering the highest performances.
Paul adds that, as well as re-used materials, the HydroFlex features another new ingredient.
“With the HydroFlex version, we’ve also added Zeolite minerals to benefit from their water-absorbing properties,” he says. “This results in non-floating granules even with heavy rainfall, and no agglomeration, which helps to regulate field temperature and pitch maintenance, while improving players’ comfort.
“In short, we care for our people and our planet. Our sustainable philosophy has enabled us to develop the exclusive FieldTurf ProMax HydoFlex high-end infill solution.”
The new product has been designed with football and rugby in mind and can be used for a number of other sports.
FieldTurf is the synthetic turf division of Tarkett Sports, part of the Tarkett Group.
It has provided solutions to many top football clubs, including Ajax, Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Everton, Kilmarnock and Olympique Lyonnais amongst many others. It has also provided rugby solutions to Cardiff Arms Park, Toulouse and Racing 92.
