SAPCA Award Finalists in Focus: Playinnovation delivers inclusive sport in west London
The 2018 SAPCA Awards attracted a record number of entries, with a total of 17 contenders being named as finalists for the prestigious honour. From those, a panel of judges chose David Morley Architects as the overall winner of the prize for the company’s work on the Sports Hub at University of Warwick.
Among the finalists was sport and play area specialist Playinnovation, which was recognised for its work on an inclusive outdoor activity space in west London.
A Re-energised Space
In 2018, Playinnovation was part of a team which has been credited with creating one of the UK’s most innovative, family-inclusive sports areas. Working in partnership with London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham Council and The Field Road Tenants & Residents Association, Playinnovation successfully re-energised and brought to life an area which was previously disused and tired.
The once derelict space, at the Field Road estate in Fulham, now houses a colourful, vibrant and innovative multi-use games area (MUGA), offering a range of opportunities for physical and mental activities.
The project’s success owes much to the work conducted on mapping out the community’s exact needs and wishes for the space. The process – which involved listening to the thoughts and feedback of the community on and around the Field Road Estate – enabled the Playinnovation design team to create a scheme which captured the very essence of what community life is like in the vibrant London suburb.
Following the residents’ wishes, the new £140,000 community space now features a wide range of sport and play-focused elements. These include Playinnovation’s new sensory Hype Courts basketball boards, educational target games, table tennis tables, traverse walls and outdoor gym equipment.
At the unveiling of the new space, which took place in July 2018, local children and families were treated to a basketball show from one of the world’s top basketball troupe, Trickstar, which was touring the UK with dance group Diversity.
“This amazing new space will bring our community closer,” said Rene Biro, vice chair of the Field Road Tenants’ and Residents’ Association.
“The area has been designed with care and attention – and will promote a healthy lifestyle with an array of interactive games in the heart of Fulham.”
Marco Boi, CEO and founder of Playinnovation added: “The environment in which we live, work and play has a huge impact on our happiness and wellbeing.
“Therefore, to collaborate and work with not only Hammersmith and Fulham Council, but the Tenants and Residents Association too, resulted in one of the best installations we’ve completed to date.
“We have taken inspiration from the world of Pop-Sport Culture, fashion and Street Art to create an exciting, educational and sustainable activity area for members of this community.”
