SAPCA has published a new position paper on the recycling of synthetic sports surfacing.

The document, called SAPCA Recycling Position, highlights clear guidance on the legal responsibilities and position regarding the collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of waste synthetic sports surfaces. This is to ensure those involved in the design, construction, operation maintenance and, most importantly, those dealing with end-of-life sports facilities understand their responsibilities.

As well as promoting best practice to members, the publication of the paper – led by SAPCA Technical Lead, Colin Corline – will provide advice to facility owners and operators, as well as the end users of facilities.

It also outlines how SAPCA will:

• continue to promote best practice guidance for members, funding organisations and sports facility managers and owners to ensure that waste treatment compliance is adopted into their contractual documentation.

• compile a register of waste disposal sites that hold the required Environmental Permit specific to the type of waste being processed. This register will be promoted to SAPCA members and to the wider sports facility construction industry to ensure compliance in waste treatment.

• work with the devolved agencies (EA, SEPA, NWR, NIEA) to establish a route map to fully compliant solutions across the UK.

SAPCA CEO, Richard Shaw, said: “With sustainability, end-of-life treatment/disposal and recycling becoming more relevant to the operation of all SAPCA members and the sports construction industry in general, we need to take the lead and develop a position for the industry to promote best practice both to our members but also to give clarity in responsibility to the wider market.”

The SAPCA Recycling Position has been added to the technical guidance section of the SAPCA website, on the “End of Life Disposal Guidance” page, which can be accessed here.
