Speaker biography

Dr Paul Brindley

Senior Lecturer, Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture & Landscape, University of Sheffield

Paul is an expert in mapping spatial inequalities and has published over 60 peer reviewed journal articles and has worked on over 50 funded research projects.

Paul was the lead author on the University of Sheffield 2025 study on play inequalities in England (together with Dr Michael Martin). This work has helped demonstrate the significant differences that exist in children’s access to playgrounds and play opportunities depending on where children live, strengthening the case for better national data, more systematic planning and targeted investment.

In partnership with Play England, Sheffield’s play inequalities work has achieved notable outcomes including changes in national policy, influencing and shaping government funding, and establishing the strategic platform for play provision planning – Playces.
