Robert O.N. Torto (Rasta Rolla)
Civil Engineer, Active Travel & Play Campaigner, Rasta Rolla
With 20 years of professional experience as a Civil Engineer, specialising in road safety and cycle scheme design, Robert O.N. Torto (also known as Rasta Rolla) brings rare technical insight into how our streets are constructed – and how they must be fundamentally reclaimed for children and communities.
Having implemented more School Streets than any other individual in the UK during his engineering career, Robert transitioned from municipal infrastructure to frontline advocacy to continue transforming public space.
Known for his high-impact public engagement – using a modern Victorian high-wheel bicycle and pop-up play streets to turn grey tarmac into spaces of joy, connection, and unexpected play – he challenges traditional ideas of who our streets are designed for. Grounded in a commitment to restoring childhood freedom and ensuring children are seen as legitimate users of our neighbourhoods rather than disruptions to be managed, Robert bridges the gap between technical design and grassroots community liberation.
